The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a new virus that causes respiratory illnesses. It can spread from person to person. The virus was first identified in Wuhan, China, from an animal source. At this time it is unclear how easily the virus is spreading between people.
People with Novel Coronavirus will have mild to severe respiratory illnesses with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus and the following everyday preventions such as:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
If you are sick, the following will help decrease the spreading of respiratory illness to others:
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your cough and sneeze with tissue, and throw it away
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
If you have been in China within the last couple of months and feel sick with fever, cough or difficulty breathing you should seek medical care. Call your health care provider prior to going they will instruct you on how to get care without exposing other people to your illness. While you are sick, avoid contact with other people and delay travel.
