Senior Spotlight: Mildred Pooler Chaney

This month’s spotlight shines on one of our most distinguished members, Mildred Pooler Chaney. The results from our essay style interview are as follows:

When and where were you born?

I was born June 27, 1952 in Dublin, Georgia as the youngest of six children.

What is your husband’s name?

My husband’s name is Carl Chaney.

How long have you been married?

I have been married for 40 years (12 /27/1975).

Do you have any children?

Yes, I have one daughter, Carranna Chaney who lives in Tucson, Arizona.

What are your hobbies/interests?

My hobbies and interests include crocheting, traveling,reading, solving Sudoku puzzles, researching family genealogy, watching TV and playing Phase Ten.

Tell us briefly about your career including activities at Fellowship.

  • Graduate of Oconee High School in Dublin, Georgia.
  • Attended Fort Valley State (College) University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
  • Graduate of Edwards AFB, California First Red Cross Volunteer Dental Assistant Course.
  • 44-Year member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. An organization committed to scholarship, service, finer womanhood and sisterly love.
  • Worked as a teacher in both public and private schools. Career began in Dooly County and continued in Houston County at Pearl Stephens Elementary and Fellowship Christian Academy (FCA).
  • Served in various USAF Chapel positions as Assistant Secretary for the Protestant Parish Council, Religious Education Teacher, Usher and Sunday School Superintendent.
  • Joined FBBC in 1993. Served as Greeter, Children’s Church worker, Youth CE/ Bible Study/ VBS teacher, Women’s Fellowship and Pulpit Committee Assistant Secretary.
  • Selected as Houston County’s Teacher of the Year (1998/1999) by Sam’s Club/ Walmart while teaching at FCA.
  • Received numerous FBBC awards and certificates for dedicated service, stewardship, and appreciation.

How has your career molded you as a person?

My career as a teacher molded me to be a more conscious person. strive each day to be the best Christ-like example I can be as I reflect God’s love in my daily life. I want to be a shining and positive example, not only for the young people I teach, but also for the lives I touch each day as well.

What are the most important lessons you have learned in life?

That everything worth having will not come easy -So work hard, be faithful and persevere. Life is too short to waste time -make a difference. Practice what you preach because people will judge you by your actions more than your words.

How would you like to be remembered?

I would like to be remembered as a caring and faithful servant of God, who sought a good fight, finished (My) the race and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7) and was an asset to my home, church and community.

What is “your message” word of wisdom to Generations X, Y, and Z?

My message to Generations X, Y, and Z is you don’t have to be perfect, but be the very best that “You” can be. Always remember whatever you do in this life, big or small, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus… (Colossians 3:17) because when all is said and done “Only what you do for Christ will last.”
